Let's face it, if you've been on the internet and surrounded by the meme culture, you know that Morbius is a bad movie, whether you've seen it or not. The movie came out on April 1, 2022, and despite the hype, it flopped horribly. Morbius could've paved the way for a standalone Sinister Six movie on the big screen, but the reviews say otherwise. The movie received a disappointing 17 percent on Rotten Tomatoes' rotten-to-fresh scale. "Cursed with uninspired effects, rote performances, and a borderline nonsensical story, this dreary mess is a vain attempt to make Morbius happen," says the critic reviews in Rotten Tomatoes.
There are various iterations of the Morbius meme, considering how this has been memed to the high heavens. People online have been jokingly showing extreme enthusiasm towards this movie. Twitter users sarcastically praised the film, misattributed made-up quotes to characters, and begged for a full slate of decades' worth of sequels to go into production.
The meme somehow popped off sometime in May 2022, when a Twitter user @ElvisTheAlienTV tweeted, "when Morbius showed up during the post credits scene in the new Doctor Strange and said 'hey Strange... it's morbin time' I cried tears of joy." The tweet gained over 12,000 retweets and 143,000 likes in just four days. The joke itself is a reference to the Power Rangers' catchphrase, "It's morphin' time!"
However, that is not the indication of the movie having a high demand. The execs at Sony took this the wrong way and decided to re-release the movie in 1000 theaters just last weekend (03/06). Of course, it flopped, again, as it fetched only USD 85,000 during that Friday.
Lesson of the day: read the room better. In my opinion, it doesn't take a lot to see whether people are being sarcastic or genuine, especially on this grand of a scale. I personally don't even bother to see the movie, even more after seeing the reviews. But, what about you? Have you seen it? Is it really that bad, in your opinion?
