After their participation in numerous international art book fairs in the past few months, Bandung-based experimental design studio/publication imprint Copyright/Reserved and type foundry Tokotype returns to their hometown with a playful supermarket pop-up showcasing design-related products: SuperFamily Mart.
The collaborative project takes the shape of a site-specific exhibition reminiscent of a supermarket, albeit with a heavy focus on graphic design. Leksikal, a retail font by Tokotype, takes center stage as the primary identity of SuperFamily Mart-with layouts created by Copyright/Reserved. The experiential installation is also made possible by tech developer company DSH, who created an interactive type simulator in which guests can tweak and experiment with the font's details, including its weights, sizes, and tracking, to showcase the versatility of Leksikal directly by typing on their phones.
Taking place at Grammars, Cihapit, the bustling area which attracts a lot of visitors is deliberately chosen as it aligns with Copyright/reserved and Tokotype's aim to bring graphic design to the wider public. Of course, it wouldn't be a supermarket without products to buy. Copyright/reserved and Tokotype teamed up with recycling initiative Olah Plastic, juice bar Pollen Gallery, and carry goods brand Syma on a wide range of products. One such example is a keychain tube squeezer made out of recycled plastic, in collaboration with Olah Plastic. Visitors can also enjoy a refreshing juice collaboration with Los Tropis, or have their pictures taken with a specially-designed frame in Photograms.
SuperFamily Mart is open for public from Friday, 22 December 2023 to 8 January 2024, with a Leksikal font launch event and special talk session with Tokotype, Aditya Wiraatmaja, DSH, and Copyright/Reserved on Saturday, 23 December 2023.
