Another dark comedy presented by HBO that you need to watch now approaching season 3, The Righteous Gemstones, is a series created and played by comedian; Danny McBride about the superrich televangelist's dysfunctional family and their deviances.
The story revolves around the Gemstone family led by a widower, Dr. Eli Gemstone (John Goodman), accompanied by his obnoxious children Jesse Gemstone (Danny McBride), Judy Gemstone (Eddy Patterson), and Kelvin Gemstone (Adam DeVine). In addition, the cherry-on-top complexities keep on coming from Eli's brother and other swindlers while Eli eagerly expands his megachurch empire.
The ugly truth about their engagement in very non-Christian activities involving drugs, greed, psychotic, arrogant, and debauched attitude led to a near-death experience, backstabs, blackmails, and insults--will bring you so many questions behind the life of the megachurch.
Even though this TV series is not a true story, the televangelist mega-business certainly exists. In the GQ interview, Danny said that "he drew both from his religious upbringing and attending actual megachurch services to strengthen the look and feel of The Righteous Gemstones." According to Danny, "He and his family had an awful experience attending church when he was young."
This satirical caricature TV series that first premiered in 2019 can be provocative and somewhat offensive for some people. Then again, we can't deny that sometimes religion can be the best weapon to be utilized just for "people" to fulfill their egos. So, I guess this series can be one funny reminder for many parts.
